Forest Melbury 4m x 3m Log Cabin (34mm) Double Glazed and painted black

Buying a log cabin can be a lifechanging experience. Not only are these garden buildings suitable for use the whole year round, they are exceptionally versatile too. Whether you’re looking for a garden retreat, home office or workshop, a log cabin will often fit the bill perfectly and meet all your requirements.

Here at Shedstore, nothing gives us greater pleasure than hearing from satisfied customers, so when we saw that Simon Ferrara, an Italian potter, based in Fife, had posted images of his new log cabin on Instagram, we just had to invite him onto our blog for a chat…

Our Interview with Simon Ferrara Ceramics

a technical drawing of the Forest Melbury 4m x 3m Log CabinShedstore: Last autumn, you bought a Forest Melbury 4m x 3m Log Cabin (34mm) with Double Glazed Windows, a 4m x 3m Log Cabin Base Kit, and Superior Felt with Underlay from us. How would you summarise this experience?

Simon: It has been an amazing experience throughout.

Shedstore: What attracted you to this particular log cabin?

Simon: I was looking for something that was neither too big nor too small. It needed to fit in my garden but give me ample space to operate my pottery business. The size of this cabin was perfect. Also, I thought the design and set up looked simple yet effective, and the number of windows was ideal for letting in plenty of natural light.

Simon: Assembling the cabin was an extremely easy and fast process. My partner and I moved the numbered pieces from the front of the house to the back garden, and then two of our friends assembled the cabin for us. Because it was raining, this took about three days, but with better weather we think it would have been done in two. No other help was required.

Shedstore: How do you plan to use this log cabin and how has it benefitted your business so far?

Simon: I use the cabin for my pottery and it’s been a life saver. I used to rent a studio before getting the cabin. It was a tiny, cold room, far from home, and I was paying a lot of money for it. Now, I have a beautiful, warm, stylish studio of my own – at the back of my garden! It helps me stay extremely organised and is only three seconds away from home!

Simon: I used Farrow and Ball black outdoor paint for the exterior, after applying an outdoor wood sealant. I treated the inside too and then coated it in a washable white paint, so that I can keep it clean at all times.

I had the plumbing done just before assembling the cabin. It was a very easy and cheap job. Now I have both running hot and cold water, which is priceless.

I also had electricity wired, just after the cabin was assembled.

My log cabin is now fully functional and could easily be used as a second home. It has everything you could possibly need in there. Though it’s not insulated, it retains the heat extremely well. If it’s particularly cold outside, I have a small electric heater, which warms up the cabin in no time at all.

Simon: There’s nothing I don’t like about it. I honestly love this cabin and should have bought it sooner!

Shedstore: Do you have any advice you’d like to share with people thinking about buying one of these log cabins?

Simon: Preparing the ground for the cabin takes no time at all. We dug the holes for water pipes and electricity, levelled the surface off with gravel, and placed the plastic base on top. You guys provided the plastic base, which I assembled in no time.

It took just a few hours to do everything. After that, we were ready to assemble the cabin. The instructions were super detailed so anyone could assemble it without previous knowledge or particularly good DIY skills.
