What are the different types of remote working?

When grouped together “home and remote working” is referred to as distance working. This means a workplace that is not a company office. Distance working, is also sometimes known as telecommuting and can include working from home, a coffee shop, or even a different city or country. This type of work arrangement has become increasingly popular in recent years, as technology has made it easier to communicate and collaborate remotely.

The three main distance working roles are:

1)    Full time home – all working hours are completed from home

2)    Remote – this is working at a remote location, that is not a company office. This could be at a hotdesking office building, employee-shared space, a work colleague’s home, or a range of other locations which are internet enabled and

3)    Hybrid – this is a popular approach and involves part-time working in the company office and part time distance working

In a 2022 survey of London workers, it was revealed that 61% worked Hybrid, 20% worked at a company office only, 13% worked in a home office only and 7% worked in other remote locations. In a 2022 PWC survey, employees stated their preferred working locations were:

1)    Full time remote working – 26%

2)    Mainly remote with some in person working – 23%

3)    50/50 share of remote and in person working – 25%

4)    Mainly in person with some remote working – 15%

5)    Full time in person working – 11%

What are the reasons behind the distance working trend in recent years?

Distance working has been found to offer a number of benefits for both employees and employers.

Here are just some of the reasons:

1)    Technology - the development and advancement of technology has enabled remote working to become a viable option for many businesses. With the widespread availability of reliable internet connections, digital tools, and hardware/software advances, it is now easier than ever to collaborate and communicate with colleagues from anywhere in the world

2)    Cost savings – for both businesses and employees:

a.    Businesses - remote working can reduce overhead costs for businesses, as there is reduced need to rent office space or buy additional furniture and equipment

b.    Employees - reduced office expenses (meals and entertainment), reduced commuting costs (fuel and maintenance on vehicles), etc.

3)    COVID-19 and social distancing – the COVID-19 pandemic increased the need for distance working due to the need to practice social distancing to reduce the spread of the virus. Working from home reduced the risk of infection by allowing employees to avoid large gatherings in the workplace and reduced contact with other employees. Another factor was the non-availability of public transport for employees to be able to travel to work

4)    Modern working - seen as a modern way of working, remote working offers greater flexibility for both employers and employees. It allows employees to work from any location, at any time, giving them the freedom to balance their work and personal commitments more effectively. For employers, it offers the ability to tap into a wider talent pool, free of geographical constraints

5)    Productivity improvements – studies have found that remote working can lead to increased productivity, as employees are more focused when they are able to work in a comfortable environment. This can benefit businesses by increasing output and reducing costs

6)    Environmental benefits – distance working reduces the need for employees to commute, which can help to reduce the environmental impact of businesses. This is beneficial to both employers and employees
