What is a lean to greenhouse?

A lean to greenhouse is a glazed garden building that directly connects to an existing structure (e.g., fence, garage, house, or wall). The name “lean to” is historic and originates from a time when greenhouses/sheds only had three walls and needed the other building to “lean on” and stay erect. Modern-day lean to greenhouses have four walls, their design, however, still expects that they will connect to another structure.

What size lean to greenhouses do you have for sale?

Our size range is from a small lean to greenhouse size of 4’x2’ right up to a large size of 8’x16’. Our most popular size is 8’x6’, which is a mid-sized greenhouse. You may be considering buying locally from a “near me” supplier, but they are very unlikely to stock as wide a range as Shedstore does.

What materials are available?

We have wooden, plastic and metal lean to greenhouses available, these are all discussed below. All material types will also be glazed with shatterproof styrene glazing.

Wooden lean to greenhouse

If you favour a classic or traditional style you will love the natural timber appearance of our wooden lean to greenhouses. We also have some models for sale which are pre-painted, or if you prefer, you could paint or stain the greenhouse after installation or at a later date.

Wood is a natural insulator, which is an important quality for a greenhouse. Wooden greenhouses are very sturdy and are much easier to customise than plastic or metal alternatives.

Although wood tends to rot, our wooden lean to greenhouses are pressure treated or dip treated (within the price), which inhibits rotting.

Polycarbonate lean to greenhouse

Our plastic polycarbonate lean to greenhouses are modern in style and manufactured from high impact polycarbonate by Palram. A major advantage of owning a polycarbonate lean to is that it is low maintenance. Plastic does not rot, it will not crack, it will not rust and is also resistant to adverse weather conditions. Occasionally, polycarbonate greenhouses will need to be wiped down and that is all the maintenance that is required.

A downfall of plastic is that it is more difficult to customise than wood. For this reason, if you choose to buy a polycarbonate lean to greenhouse it is important to clearly identify your requirements from the outset.

Metal lean to greenhouse

Our metal lean to greenhouses are modern/contemporary in style and are renowned for their high levels of security. They are available at a lower cost and are easier to install than wooden greenhouses. Although metal is prone to rust there is no need to be concerned when you buy from Shedstore as our metal greenhouses are specially treated to prevent rust.

Will a small lean to greenhouse be large enough?

Typically, a small size would be up to 8’x6’ in size. This means over 70% of the lean to greenhouses you can see on this page would be classified as “small”.

The essential qualities of a greenhouse are:

  1. Plant cultivation
  2. Storage space and
  3. A place to relax

As long as you believe the greenhouse you are buying achieves the above three objectives it should be large enough. If in any doubt, when you have the funds and the space it is always wise to buy a larger greenhouse than you think you currently need.
