What is a lean to shed?

A lean to shed is a storage structure that connects to an existing structure (e.g., a barn, fence, garage, house, or wall). Infact the name “lean to” was originally used as the sheds of the time had only three walls and needed another building to lean on to stay erect. Modern lean to sheds have four walls, but their design intends that they connect to another structure.

One area of the roof will be higher than others to allow for rainwater to naturally drain. Although lean to sheds can have apex style roofing, Shedstore’s collection are all pent roof style sheds.

What shed is best – a metal, plastic, or wooden lean to shed?

There are pros and cons to each. Which is best, varies from one person to another. We summarise the pros and cons below:

  • Metal pros – improved security, robust, resilient, contemporary style, lower cost
  • Metal cons – prone to rust (N.B. Shedstore metal sheds are treated to prevent rust), appearance considered by some less stylish
  • Plastic pros – low maintenance, will not rot, rust, or crack, weatherproof
  • Plastic cons – difficult to customise, often weaker security
  • Wood pros – traditional style, natural appearance, stain, or paint easily, very strong, can be customised
  • Wood cons – prone to rot (N.B. Shedstore treat ours to prevent this), heavier and more difficult to assemble

Many of the “cons” above are eliminated when you buy a shed from Shedstore. We eliminate whatever concerns we can through a constant process of sourcing the best sheds available on the market.

What are their advantages?

Listed below are advantages of lean to sheds over and above other sheds:

  • Lower cost – they are usually cheaper than their free standing alternative
  • Narrow - these can often be built on narrow strips. This is ideal for space maximisation. Where placed over a path or a patio (often fairly narrow), the need for laying a foundation is avoided. Although, it should be stated that the base must still be sound and solid
  • Proximity – where they share a wall with the house or garage it makes it much easier to connect to existing power and water supplies
  • Space optimisation – they make optimal use of limited space and are particularly ideal for smaller gardens.

What can lean to sheds be attached to?

Lean to sheds can be attached to a variety of other structures including:

  • Barn – in larger gardens or farms, a lean to shed can successfully be attached to a barn
  • Fence – maximise your garden space by attaching to a fence, this is a popular usage with our customers
  • Garage – add convenient storage space next to your garage and again maximise space
  • House – they are frequently attached to homes as a form of extension (often at a much lower price)
  • Wall – often it can be hard to maximise space next to a wall, or perhaps you would rather mask the wall altogether? If so, adding a lean to shed next to a wall is a perfect solution

It is important to emphasise that lean to sheds can be bought to perfectly match existing décor. This is particularly important when adding to a barn, garage, or house where owners will not want a new shed to clash with existing designs. For this reason, choose the best solutions to suit your needs from our range of metal, plastic, and wooden lean to sheds.
