Spring Garden Guide: May Tasks

As we bid farewell to April showers, you should be well into having created a wonderful spring garden.

May promises to bring with it some warmer days, warmer evenings, and hopefully a bit less rain! So now is the perfect time to move plants from greenhouses into the soil, and get your houseplants in order.

Download our Spring Garden Guide - print it and pin it to your fridge so you don’t forget what needs to be done in the garden this month.

Week 1

Be on the lookout for any late frosts. These can be extremely damaging to newly flourishing plants.

spring flower icon

Check your garden for any overcrowded clumps of spring-blooming flowers. Lift and divide them to give an even coverage come summer.

Moss and weeds will likely be in full flow now, so be diligent in getting rid of as much of it as possible in the early stages.

Week 2

sweetcorn icon

Baby vegetables can be sown and grown in containers or growbags this month. If the ground is warm and dry, then they can be sown into vegetable patches as well. If you need a new raised bed, check out our great deals here.

greenhouse vent icon

With the weather getting a bit warmer the greenhouse can be a bit tricky for young plants. Help them out by opening the vents on warm days. If you need a new greenhouse, check out our great deals here.

This is a good month to repair your lawn if you haven’t done so already. Check for any brown patches and re-seed for a full lawn this summer.

Week 3

Take some time this month to look at improving irrigation systems this summer. Water butts and containers are a great way to recycle rain water! Have you added guttering to your shed yet? Check out our shed guttering here.

Repair damaged garden buildings icon

If you didn’t get a chance earlier in the year, be sure to take a look over your sheds and other garden buildings for signs of winter damage. If spotted make sure you fix it as soon as possible. If you need a new shed, check out our great deals here.

If you’re growing strawberries this year, lay some straw between plants to discourage mould for a good crop.

Week 4

Snail icon

Some pests might start making an appearance around now, particularly slugs, snails and beetles. Be on the lookout for any signs of pest-damage to new and older plants.

Add compost icon

Make use of your compost pile and start fertilising the soil! Keep adding to it throughout the month to make sure you’ve got a constant supply. If you want a new composter, check out our wooden composters here.

If you’re desperate to get some life around your garden, hanging baskets can be put up now in sheltered areas. Make sure they aren’t too exposed to the elements to keep them safe!
